Seymore H. Marshall was born about 1947 of parents who had moved from New York City to Buffalo, New York. Seymore enlisted in the army to fight in the Civil War of 1961. At the time of his first marriage to Sophia Fritsch he was listed as a laborer in the 1880 Census. He later became a fireman until he retired By his first marriage with Sophia Fritsch, Seymore had two children, Carrie Marshall born in 1978 and Kathryn Sophia Marshall born in 1880 When Sophia Fritsch Marshall died or was divorced Seymore married Catherine who was 17 years younger than Seymore. The 1910 Census shows there were 3 children born from this second marriage. These children where Cyrus J. Marshall born 1881, Nelson W. Marshall born 1893 and Malinda Marshall born 1894. As the two girls by the first marriage grew up they moved out of the home when Carrie married William A. Teckmeyer Catherine Sophia Marshall was living with her sister when she first met William Cameron. After Catherine married William Cameron and began life in Chicago, Carrie and her husband soon followed and were living in Maywood when William Cameron moved his family to 174 N. LeClaire Ave in 1910. The two families had a close relationship and enjoyed many pleasant outings together when suddenly on a balmy and seemingly tranquil Palm Sunday shortly after noon in 1920, tragedy struck. Tornadoes had been ripping a long trail through the southern states causing over 380 dead not including blacks who were not counted at the time. There was no forecast at the time and the word tornado was not allowed to be used. The tornadoes swept in from Iowa and one struck down in Maywood where the Teckmeyers live devastating a large area of homes and farms, Including Mr. and Mrs. Teckmeyer nine people were killed and others were buried under debris but escaped serious injury. Our Cameron family drove out when we learned of the disaster but could do little except pick thru the rubble. Our photos give an idea of the ruins left behind.
Before the tornado struck the Camerons, Teckmeyer and the Marshall families spent many spent many enjoyable times visiting each other in Chicago and Buffalo as shown by the picture records of those visits. Our first photos show Catherine Sophie Marshall when she was eight years old and Carrie Marshall at a little girl and later before she got married.
On a visit from Buffalo, Malinda Marshall the younger step-sister of Carrie Teckmeyer and Catherine Cameron checks out the corn growing in the garden with Carrie and bites into a fresh cob. Carrie also inspects the flowers in the garden in their home in Maywood.
Outside of the downtown stores, museums, Cubs and Sox ball parks there were few attractions in the city at that time. Carrie and the lovely Malinda are relaxing on the porch of their home and Carrie on the ground in a park. The new west side Garfield Park Conservatory was a popular visiting attraction and Melinda is shown posing besides one of its statues on her visit.
On another visit Cyrus Marshall, Carrie Teckmeyer's step brother, is shown holding little Sonny (Robert Cameron) and Carrie is seen with Jean Cameron. Later pouting Jean poses by her self and young William is seen drinking from the fountain in Garfield Park
The inquisitive Teckmeyer Collie is herding a ruffled up Mother Chicken guarding her little chicks and Carrie has the Collie jumping in the air
